MIRMA is a self-insurance pool, created and owned entirely by participating municipalities and functions solely for their benefit. MIRMA is not an insurance agency or commercial insurance company. MIRMA began operations in 1981 to address the needs of municipalities abandoned in a hard market. It is a mature, experienced, well-staffed and financially secure pool that offers the majority of coverages a Missouri Municipality requires.

Loss Prevention
MIRMA provides an average of 5.3 on-site loss prevention visits per member each year. We work with each member to develop a loss prevention program that is tailored to fit the specific risks and political environment within your community. MIRMA encourages an increased awareness of loss prevention and the prompt correction of improper, hazardous or unsafe conditions or operations. By establishing sound loss prevention practices our members create safer communities for both residents and employees.

How does MIRMA Function
MIRMA pays all member claims from a central loss fund, with the exception of Airport Liability. MIRMA purchases a fully insured group policy to provide Airport Liability coverage for our members with airports. In addition to MIRMA’S self-insured retention limits, excess insurance is purchased annually from excess insurance and reinsurance carriers.
MIRMA distributes the cost to its members with annual assessments. Assessments are based on a rate per $100 of annual payroll. Any surplus loss funds and interest revenue that are not needed to pay claims or establish claim reserves are distributed to the members as credit against future years’ assessments.
